WHAT IS ECZEMA?
Eczema is a condition that causes inflamed, red, itchy patches of skin. There are different types and stages of eczema, but the most common form is atopic dermatitis. Eczema can occur in patients of all ages and is often the result of an allergic reaction. Although it may look alarming, it is not contagious. Eczema can appear almost anywhere on the body but usually develops on the face, hands, arms, and legs. At Arizona Skin Institute in Surprise, AZ, skilled dermatologist Dr. Jay Mehta is highly trained in diagnosing and treating eczema. He has helped countless patients all across the Greater Phoenix area and looks forward to providing you with the attentive care you deserve!
WHAT CAUSES ECZEMA?
Specialists aren’t entirely certain what caused eczema, but it’s believed to be triggered by a variety of factors: immune system abnormalities, genetics, the environment, bacteria, and certain skin products being the most common causes. Family genetics are thought to play a significant role because specific genes may cause someone to have severely sensitive skin. Those who suffer from asthma, seasonal allergies, or food sensitivities are at greater risk of developing skin conditions like eczema.
TREATMENTS FOR ECZEMA
Eczema can be addressed with a variety of over-the-counter and prescribed drugs and lotions. Hydrocortisone creams and ointments along with antihistamines, like Benadryl, may help to relieve symptoms. Prescription drugs like immunomodulators or steroid creams can assist people who have moderate to severe eczema. An oral steroid or corticosteroid might also be prescribed. In severe instances, we may apply ultraviolet light therapy or laser treatment to the affected areas. When other therapies have failed, we may prescribe immunosuppressants, which suppress the immune system.
