WHAT ARE MOLES?
A mole is a growth on top of the skin that results from a bundle of colored skin cells called melanocytes. The majority of adults have one or more moles on their body, as they are very common skin blemishes. Skilled dermatologist Dr. Jay Mehta of Arizona Skin Institute, offers routine mole checks for patients throughout the Greater Phoenix area. During mole checks, Dr. Mehta will examine, measure, and record the size of the moles on your body to identify any changes or concerns. Moles can be black, brown, pink, or tan and can be raised or flat. In many cases, moles are harmless, but they can develop into skin cancer, which is why it’s important to have them examined by a licensed skincare professional. If you live in Surprise or Phoenix, AZ, and are concerned about the size or shape of a mole, then call our office today to schedule a skin exam.
WHAT CAUSES MOLES?
Moles occur when cells in the dermis develop in a cluster instead of being dispersed beneath the skin. These types of cells are called melanocytes, and they create the pigment that gives your skin its natural color. Moles can become darker in color after being exposed to the sun, during the teenage years, and while pregnant.
MOLE REMOVAL
Most moles do not need treatment unless they become cancerous or cause great discomfort, irritation, or cosmetic issues. In these situations, Dr. Mehta may remove the mole through surgical excision. During this process, he numbs the area around the mole with a local anesthetic and uses a scalpel to remove the growth. He’ll then suture the open tissue closed and cover it with a protective bandage. In cases where the mole is flush with the skin, he may use a surgical shave technique to remove the mole. Stitches aren’t required with this procedure.
